Oprah Winfrey Moving OWN operations to West Hollywood and shuts down Harpo Studios
Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studio are closing down at the end of this year after 26 years. The Chicago based studios is where she filmed The Oprah Winfrey Show. She recently moved Oprah Winfrey Network operations to West Hollywood. OWN stopped filming at the Chicago location on Tuesday. The network is transitioning to its new space called “The Lots”
"Chicago has been everything for me. I've spent more hours in this building than I have any other building on Earth. ... We were here when there was nothing but hoes and rats on the street, and now it's one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago," Winfrey told The Hollywood Reporter. "The time had come to downsize this part of the business and to move forward. It will be sad to say goodbye, but I look ahead with such a knowing that what the future holds is even more than I can see."
Harpo Studio opened in 1990 and this really transformed the neighborhood as her shows created jobs and the area was transformed into one of Chicago’s commercial real estate and residential locations. In 2011, the then Chicago Mayor Richard Daly renamed the street where Harpo Studio is located to Oprah Winfrey Way.
It is apparent that top OWN executives have been operating between Chicago and Los Angeles and Winfrey now wants all the Networks operations to be in one location. OWN was started four years ago and is now planning on further expansions. "We have been fortunate to have this spectacular city of Chicago as our home for over 25 years and are thankful to everybody who has been a part of this great company," Erik Logan and Sheri Salata, presidents of OWN and Harpo Studios, said in a statement.
Over 200 employees will be affected by the close down.
